PÜST – Carnevale Resiano
The essential element of the Carnival of Resia is represented by the dance performed with the typical musical instruments of the Resia Valley, the cïtira (violin) and the bünkula (violoncello). The dances go on for hours and hours, in the inns and in the spaces set up for the celebrations. People dance outdoors as well, in particular on Sunday afternoon. There are two kinds of traditional masks: the “te lipe bile maškire”, the beautiful white masks, the best known because they are presented in the performances by the Val Resia folk company as well, and the “babaci” or “kukaci”, the ugly masks. The beautiful white masks are the most precious ones, enriched with colourful ribbons and high hats decorated with coloured paper flowers. Finally, on Wednesday there will be the procession and the funeral of the “babaz” in the square. After a suitable and delirious trial, the rag doll is burnt to represent the end of Carnival.
