cave del predil
Cave del Predil is a hamlet of the municipality of Tarvisio; it is located south along the Rio del Lago valley, easily reached by State Road No. 54 passing from Tarvisio to the Slovenian border at the Predil Pass (1156 m).
The origins of Cave del Predil are linked to 'mining activity that began in Ancient Roman times and ceased in 1991. Today, the building that housed the offices of the mine management houses the Mining Museum and part of the most accessible galleries have been secured and opened to the public in the International Geomining Park. Visitors accompanied by guides who explain how the ore was collected can therefore discover a decidedly evocative itinerary inside what was once one of Italy's most important mines.
History lovers can find in the Tarvisian area many traces of the past, especially those related to the Great War.In this area, in fact, important military posts were built to defend the former borders and there was no lack of clashes between Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers. The fortifications and trenches that a century ago served to prevent the advance of enemies today are fascinating remains that can be visited through walks in the heart of the forests or on the peaks of the Julian Alps. Here in Cave del Predil is the Military History Museum, which offers visitors several rooms dedicated to both World War I and World War II and the Napoleonic Campaigns.
But Cave del Predil is also nature; a few kilometers from its center, in fact, it is possible to visit and Cave Lake, which reaches a maximum depth of 35 meters. Its surface area of 59 hectares makes it the second largest lake in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The waters are clear and cold, deep blue-green in color; a small island, a relict of a partly destroyed, partly submerged morainic arch, locally determines a very striking landscape. During warm weather, the lake is a destination for days of cool relaxation along its shores or at the two equipped establishments.
